Decided to go with a black acrylic button on the front. I used my Forstner bit to make a template in a scrap piece of red oak. Using files and sandpaper I made a round piece of acrylic out of a square piece of acrylic Later I'll use the Forstner bit to make a pocket in the front panel to place my button.
The base in between coats of shellac. I read that shellac is crazy hard to work with and they weren't lying. Ground up bugs dissolved into moonshine. The alcohol dries almost instantly which means you are allowed only one single perfect (hopefully) brushstroke between brush recharging.
Finished cutting out my acrylic sidepieces. I drilled holes into each pocket so the acrylic pieces can be popped out from behind if needed.
The reflection is the underside of my deck table umbrella.
Have you seen the new huge Coke cans?
